Jazz came to Rome in the 1970s when clubs started opening around the city. The first big venue was Folkstudio which was owned by Giancarlo Cesaroni. Bob Dylan as well as Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri and Steve Lacy all played there.
Another great success was the "Music Inn" at Largo dei Fiorentini owned by Count Pepito Pignatelli and his wife Picchi. It is famous for the many musicians who made a name for themselves there. Many schools also sprang up around the city which contributed to the diffusion of music and jazz culture in particular. Schools were a reference point both for those who wanted to make music their profession or just played for passion. Along with schools, cultural associations have been vehicles for the promotion of arts, especially music, and have become a point of reference for the development of ideas. Today Italian Jazz is on a par with the standards of any nation, even the United States, and Rome is Italy's jazz capital. Below are the main clubs for good jazz music:
